Watching Our Studio Come to Life

Every day I walk into our new space and see it morphing a little more into a true boutique Pilates studio. It’s exciting for sure! With the beautiful fall weather, we’ve had our front door propped open and it’s been wonderful having neighbours pop in to see what’s happening with Bella Nails & Spa.

There’s been some concern about Bella closing, but once I explain what we’re really doing,  opening a Pilates studio at the front while keeping the spa services in the back, the curiosity quickly shifts. And then comes the big question I hear over and over:

Mat vs. Reformer: Which Pilates Class is Right for You?

If you’re new to Pilates, you might be wondering…

“Should I start with a mat class or hop right onto the reformer?”

It’s a question we hear all the time at Pilates on Plains, and the answer really depends on your goals, your body, and how you like to move. Let’s break it down so you can choose the class that’s your perfect fit.

Mat Pilates - Simple, Accessible, Surprisingly Challenging

Mat Pilates is exactly what it sounds like: a workout done on a mat, using your own body weight for resistance. Sometimes we’ll add small props like resistance bands, Pilates rings, or light hand weights to spice things up.

Don’t be fooled by the lack of springs and straps,  mat work can be just as challenging as reformer classes, and in some cases, even more so. Without the assistance of the machine, you rely 100% on your own strength, stability, and control, which can make the work incredibly intense.

Why you might love mat classes:

  • They’re easy to start,  no fancy equipment required.

  • You’ll build strength, mobility, and body awareness.

  • They’re fantastic for learning the fundamentals of Pilates.

  • You can take what you learn and practice anywhere,  home, vacation, even the backyard.

Best for: Beginners, travellers, or anyone who wants a low-equipment, high-results workout.

Reformer Pilates -Resistance, Support, and Variety

The reformer is a sleek, spring-loaded machine that uses pulleys, straps, and adjustable resistance to create a wide range of exercises. It can make a move easier or more challenging depending on how we set it up.

Why you might love reformer classes:

  • You’ll get targeted resistance for a deeper muscle workout.

  • The moving carriage challenges your stability (hello, core engagement!).

  • The variety keeps every class fresh and fun.

  • It can be more supportive for those with injuries, since we can adjust tension and range of motion.

Best for: Anyone looking for a strength, flexibility, and coordination boost,  and those who want to keep workouts exciting.

So… Which Should You Choose First?

If you’re brand new to Pilates, we recommend starting with one private reformer session (yes, that’s our studio policy!). This allows your instructor to work with you one-on-one, get you comfortable with the machine, and make sure your form is correct and safe.

From there, your instructor will recommend the right mix of mat and reformer classes based on your goals. You don’t have to guess,  our teachers will make sure you’re in the right level of class so you can feel confident, supported, and challenged in the best way for your body.

Clients will love alternating:

  • Mat for core strength, control, and mobility.

  • Reformer for resistance, variety, and that “I-feel-taller” post-class magic…seriously, it’s a thing.

The Bottom Line

Both mat and reformer Pilates deliver incredible benefits for your body and mind. The real secret? Finding the balance that keeps you motivated, challenged, and feeling great.

If you’re still not sure, ‘pop’ (Pilates On Plains) into the studio and chat with one of our instructors. We’ll help you choose the perfect starting point,  and cheer you on every step of the way.

Get excited…it’s all coming together
