Why I Believe in Pilates: A Personal Story of Healing and Hope
This summer has been a tough one. My back has been tricky for months. I don’t know what happened in the spring, but something shifted, I seriously hurt my back. Since then, I’ve had an MRI, was prescribed oxy for the pain, tried cortisone injections, leaned on my osteopath, did rounds of physical therapy, the worst was doing dry needling in my back muscles. It sounds as bad as it hurt. My last round was 27 needles. OUCH—and yet, the ache still lingers.
I haven’t been doing Pilates, yoga, or any kind of workout. And to be honest, it’s left me feeling discouraged, uncomfortable, and very weak. But here’s what I also know: I’ve been here before. Getting back on track isn’t about waiting for perfect timing, it’s about taking the first step.
It all started with a dull ache in my lower back years ago. I brushed it off, blaming it on “sleeping funny” or just “getting older.” The truth was, I was ignoring my body’s calls for help, until it finally forced me to pay attention.
I tried the usual suspects, stretching, heating pads, quick fixes from the drugstore. Nothing lasted. Then, like a nudge from the universe, someone mentioned Pilates. At first, I thought Pilates was only for graceful, bendy dancers with perfect posture. That was not me. But I gave it a try.
That one class changed everything. Pilates didn’t just ease my back, it strengthened my entire system. My core grew stronger, my posture improved, and I became more aware of how I moved. It wasn’t about pushing through pain; it was about reconnecting with my body in a way that felt empowering and sustainable.
Was it a magic cure? No. But it was steady, lasting progress. It taught me to move differently, breathe better, and most importantly, show up for myself.
That’s why I’m so passionate about Pilates now. I know what it feels like to live in pain, to feel like your body is holding you back. And I also know the freedom that comes when you start moving with purpose and strength.
Pilates on Plains was born from that transformation. If my journey can help even one other person feel stronger, straighter, and more supported, then every ache, every adjustment, and every sore core muscle was worth it.
