The “I Used to Be Fit” Syndrome

Postpartum moms participating in a Pilates reformer class with their babies at Pilates on Plains studio in Burlington.

Baby Day is the Best Day

Strong isn’t a phase. It’s a decision.

There’s a line I hear in the studio all the time.

“I used to be fit.”

It’s usually said with a little laugh.
Sometimes with a shrug.
Sometimes like it belongs to a completely different chapter of life.

I used to run.
I used to play tennis.
I used to go to the gym five days a week.

And then… life happened.

Work got busy.
Kids needed rides everywhere.
An injury showed up.
Or the routine just quietly slipped away over time.

Next thing you know, you catch yourself saying it like it’s a fact.

“I used to be fit.”

But here’s what I always think when I hear that.

Being strong isn’t something that only belongs in the past.

Starting Again Is the Hardest Part

Honestly, the hardest part isn’t the workout.

It’s walking through the door.

It’s signing up for the class.
It’s wondering if everyone else in the room will be stronger, younger, or somehow magically better at it than you.

Almost every new client has the same quiet thought running through their head.

Am I going to be able to keep up?

The funny thing is, half the room is usually wondering the exact same thing.

You Don’t Start Where You Left Off

A lot of people think that if they were active years ago, they should somehow start there again.

But that’s not how this works.

You don’t start where you left off.

You start where you are today.

And that’s actually one of the reasons Pilates works so well.

The reformer lets us adjust everything to the person in front of it.
The springs change.
The positions change.
The pace changes.

What doesn’t change is the goal.

Helping you build strength in a way that feels good for your body.

A Moment in the Studio That Always Makes Me Smile

One of my favourite things to watch lately at the studio is our mom and baby class.

These women have just spent months growing an entire human being. Their bodies have gone through enormous change. For a while, exercise isn’t the priority. Rest, healing, and caring for a brand new little person takes centre stage.

But eventually something shifts.

They decide it’s time to come back to themselves a little bit.
To move again.
To rebuild strength.
To reconnect with their bodies.

And when they do, it’s pretty amazing to watch.

Week by week you can see their confidence returning. Their posture changing. Their strength coming back.

They made the decision to start again.

And honestly, if these incredible women can do it while juggling babies, sleepless nights, and everything else that comes with new motherhood…

The rest of us can probably find our way back too.

Progress Happens Faster Than You Think

One of my favourite things to watch in the studio is what happens after a few weeks.

Someone who walked in saying,

“I used to be fit.”

Starts saying something very different.

“My back feels better.”
“I’m standing taller.”
“I feel stronger again.”

Not because they went all out or pushed themselves too hard.

But because they simply started.

Strong Isn’t a Phase

Strength doesn’t belong to a younger version of you.

It isn’t tied to a certain age or stage of life.

Strength is something we can rebuild anytime.

Sometimes it just starts with the decision to begin again.

If you’ve been thinking about getting back into movement, maybe this is your little nudge.

At Pilates on Plains, we meet people exactly where they are.

No pressure.
No expectations.

Just a place to start again.

And one little studio note before I go…

You might be noticing that some of our classes are starting to fill up, and we’ve even had the odd waitlist pop up here and there. If there’s a class you really want, it’s a good idea to sign up ahead of time so you can be sure to grab your spot.

Have a wonderful week…Happy Easter (next weekend) and check back in on Easter Monday for a new post.

I Snapped at Steve… And It Wasn’t About the Shoes

👞

I snapped at Steve the other day… and honestly, it wasn’t about him.

He was heading to Florida for the weekend. A business trip.
And I was staying behind… holding down the fort.

The house.
The dog.
The studio.
The spa.
Classes to teach.
A special event that would take me out for hours.
An evening hospital appointment.

And there it was.
The tipping point.

His shoes. Left at the door.

That’s it. That’s what did it.

And I snapped.

💭

THE REALIZATION

The truth?

It had nothing to do with the damn shoes!

It was the mental load.
The constant running list in my head.
The feeling of being pulled in ten different directions at once.

I’m not typically a snapper.
But in that moment, I felt completely at my wits’ end.

And what made it worse?

I didn’t even want to teach a class.

I wanted to be in the class.

🔥

THE SHIFT

So instead of pushing through… I paused.

I went downstairs.
Got on my reformer.
Pulled up one of my favourite YouTube instructors.

And I worked.

Like really worked.

Full body. Head to toe. No distractions.

And something shifted.

🌬️

WHY IT WORKED

Sometimes life throws so many things at us all at once…
our minds just can’t keep up.

We try to fix it the “nice” ways:

  • journaling

  • a cup of tea

  • a quiet bath

And don’t get me wrong… those are beautiful tools.

But sometimes?

They don’t cut it.

Sometimes you don’t need to sit with your thoughts…

👉 You need to get out of your head and back into your body.

That’s what movement does.

It releases the tension.
It resets your breathing.
It gives your mind a break from carrying everything.

💡

THE TAKEAWAY

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed lately…
snappy…
tight…
like everything is just a little too much…maybe just too much winter.

You’re not alone.

And you’re not broken.

You might just need to move.

Not perfectly.
Not gracefully.

Just move.

That one workout completely changed my day.

Not because it fixed everything…
but because it gave me back to myself.

And sometimes?

That’s all we need.

⚖️

FINDING YOUR BALANCE

That day reminded me of something important.

It’s not always about slowing down.
And it’s not always about pushing harder.

It’s about knowing what you need… and when you need it.

Sometimes your body is asking for stillness.
A quiet moment. A journal. A cup of tea.

And sometimes?

It’s asking you to move.
To sweat.
To shake off the weight of everything you’ve been carrying.

The magic is in finding the balance between the two.

Not living in one… and ignoring the other.

That one workout completely changed my day.

Not because it fixed everything…
but because it brought me back to myself.

And later that night, when things were quiet again…
I picked up my journal.

Different tools. Same goal.

Coming back to balance.

✍️

JOURNAL PROMPT

Where in my life do I need more balance right now…
and what does my body actually need from me today?

🤍

We’re hosting a special Pilates + Sound Bath experience…with the Lotus Loft
…if you’ve been feeling the weight of everything lately…

You’ll want to be in that room.

Move your body.
Then lie back and let the sound carry the rest.

Spots are limited.

Email me to reserve your spot on Sunday March 29th @ 6:00-7:30 PM

Why Your Back Hurts and How Pilates Can Help

Reformer Pilates exercise for back pain at Pilates on Plains in Burlington Ontario.

Understanding one of the most common reasons people start Pilates.

Most people don’t start Pilates because they want a trendy workout.

They start because something hurts.

For many people walking into Pilates on Plains, that something is their back.

Low back pain is one of the most common physical complaints in adults. It often shows up as stiffness in the morning, discomfort after sitting too long, or tightness that spreads into the hips or legs.

Many people assume their back itself is the problem.

But more often than not, the back is simply doing too much work because other muscles are not doing enough.

Your Spine Needs a Support System

Your spine was never designed to carry the load on its own.

It relies on a team of supporting muscles to keep it stable and moving well.

These include:

• deep core muscles
• glutes
• hip stabilizers
• hamstrings
• pelvic floor
• even the muscles in the feet

When these muscles become weak, tight, or inactive, the spine starts compensating. Over time that compensation can lead to compression, stiffness, and irritation.

This is when people begin noticing symptoms like:

• aching in the lower back
• tight hips
• pain traveling into the glutes
• stiffness when getting out of bed
• discomfort after long periods of sitting

The body is simply asking for better support.

Why Pilates Works So Well for Back Pain

Pilates is particularly effective for back pain because it focuses on controlled movement, alignment, and deep stabilizing muscles.

Instead of forcing the body through big movements, Pilates teaches the body to move with balance and support.

In a properly guided Pilates program, exercises are designed to:

• strengthen the deep abdominal muscles that stabilize the spine
• activate the glutes and hips to support the pelvis
• improve mobility through the spine
• reduce compression in the lower back
• retrain healthy movement patterns

Over time, the body learns how to distribute work more evenly across muscles instead of relying on the lower back to do everything.

What Many Clients Notice First

Interestingly, most people do not first notice increased strength.

They notice relief in everyday life.

Simple things start to feel easier.

Clients often say they notice:

• getting out of bed without stiffness
• sitting longer without discomfort
• walking with better posture
• feeling taller and more supported
• less tightness in the hips and glutes

These small improvements build over time and help the body move with more confidence and stability.

The Pilates on Plains Approach

At Pilates on Plains, we approach back health with patience and precision.

Our focus is not on pushing harder.

It is on moving better.

Small class sizes allow instructors to watch movement patterns carefully and offer guidance so exercises are performed safely and effectively.

Classes focus on:

• controlled reformer exercises
• proper alignment
• gradual strength building
• mobility for the spine and hips
• improving body awareness

Because when it comes to back pain, how you move matters just as much as how often you move.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pilates and Back Pain

Can Pilates help lower back pain?

Yes. Pilates strengthens the deep core muscles that support the spine. When these muscles become stronger, they help stabilize the pelvis and reduce strain on the lower back. Many people find their back pain improves as their body learns to move with better support and alignment.

Is Pilates safe if I already have back pain?

In most cases, yes. Pilates is known for controlled, low-impact movements that focus on stability and posture. A qualified instructor can modify exercises to make them appropriate for beginners or people experiencing discomfort.

Why does strengthening the core help the back?

Your core muscles act like a natural brace for your spine. When these muscles are weak, the lower back often compensates and becomes overworked. Strengthening the core helps distribute movement and support more evenly through the body.

Can the Pilates reformer help with back pain?

The Pilates reformer provides gentle resistance and support, which allows people to strengthen muscles while reducing pressure on the spine. Many people find reformer Pilates especially helpful when beginning a back strengthening program.

How long does it take for Pilates to help back pain?

Many people begin noticing small improvements within a few weeks of consistent practice. Improvements typically include better posture, less stiffness, and increased support through the core and hips.

A Small Moment to Reflect

Before your next workout or walk, take a moment to ask yourself:

Where does my body feel supported… and where does it feel like it is working too hard?

Sometimes awareness is the first step toward change.

Ready to Start?

If your back has been bothering you, Pilates can be a supportive place to begin rebuilding strength and movement confidence.

You do not need to be flexible.
You do not need to be strong.

You simply need a body that is ready to start moving in a way that supports the spine instead of fighting against it.

Until next week, take good care of your body.
It carries you through everything.

Foundations

Every morning when we step out of bed, the first thing we ask our bodies to do is stand on our feet and move.

Our feet carry us through the entire day.

They support our balance, posture, and the way the rest of the body moves.

That is why in Pilates we begin with foot work.

Foot work is not filler. It is foundation.

It wakes up the muscles in the legs and core. It reminds the body how to move in alignment. It prepares us for everything that follows in the workout.

In many ways, foot work represents something bigger in Pilates.

It represents the importance of foundation.

And foundation matters in everything we do.

Foundations in Pilates

Pilates is a method built on progression.

You learn the basics.
You develop control.
You build strength.
Then you progress.

That is why at Pilates on Plains we offer different types of classes such as Foundations, All Levels, and Elevated.

Each class is designed for a different stage of the Pilates journey.

The goal is not to separate people. The goal is to support everyone so they can succeed at the level where they are right now.

If you are new to reformer Pilates and step into an advanced class, it can feel overwhelming in a hurry. Or worse…it becomes an unsafe environment.

The pace may move quickly.
The exercises may feel unfamiliar.
Confidence can drop quickly when you feel like you are trying to catch up.

On the other hand, experienced clients can feel frustrated when a class constantly needs to slow down to teach the basics. This was always a personal pet peeve of mine and why I became so adamant about having and respecting the class levels.

…because neither of those situations is ideal.

Pilates works best when the room moves together.

Why reading the class description matters

When booking a class, most people look at one thing first.

The time.

But the class description tells you something much more important.

It explains who the class is designed for and what level of experience is expected.

Choosing the right class allows you to move with confidence and progress more effectively.

When everyone in the room is working at a similar level, the class flows better and the experience becomes stronger for everyone.

We are still building the schedule

Pilates on Plains is still a growing studio and we are continuing to learn what times and levels work best for our community.

Some classes fill quickly.
Some times work better than others.

We will continue adjusting the schedule as we learn what works best for all of you.

If you do not see a class that works for your level at a time that fits your schedule, please reach out.

Your feedback helps us shape the schedule and build something that works for the entire community.

A note about cancellations

Because our classes are small and carefully structured, every spot in the room matters.

When a class is booked, that space is reserved and instructors prepare accordingly.

For this reason our cancellation policy applies to all clients and we are not able to make exceptions.

This allows us to respect the time of our instructors and ensures fairness for clients who may be waiting for a space.

It all comes back to foundation

Pilates teaches us something simple but powerful.

Strong movement begins with a strong foundation.

Foot work reminds us of that every class.

And choosing the right class level builds the foundation for your progress.

When the foundation is right, everything else becomes stronger.

Wise words from one of our lovely members.

“If You Do Not Focus on Your Health You Will Be Forced to Focus on Your Illness”

A Reflection from Pilates on Plain’s member Ashley - you can meet her on IG today.

Every now and then someone says something during a class or a quiet conversation at the front desk that stops me in my tracks. Last week Ashley one of our POP members shared her why with me:

“If you do not focus on your health you will be forced to focus on your illness.”

There is a truth in these words that is hard to ignore. They carry weight because we all know deep down that health is not something we can push aside forever. Our bodies keep score. Our minds keep score. Our energy confidence mood and strength all respond to the choices we make every day.

This is not about perfection. It is not about hitting a certain number on the scale or trying to become a fitness superstar. It is about staying ahead of the things that can take away the joy and freedom we want to keep in our lives.

It is about choosing to care for ourselves before life gives us no other choice.

So let us explore this idea through the three pillars that shape everything we do at Pilates on Plains. Nutrition. Mental health. And physical health especially Pilates.

Nutrition The Foundation Your Energy Stands On

You do not need a complicated diet or a kitchen full of powders to be healthy. Real nutrition comes down to one simple question.

Do the foods I eat help my body work for me or against me

When we fuel ourselves with real whole foods enough protein colourful vegetables proper hydration and meals that nourish us instead of only filling the gap we set the tone for the entire day.
Clearer thinking. Better digestion. More energy. Less inflammation. A calmer mood.

Eating well is not about restriction. It is about support. It is giving your body the tools it needs so you are not left managing the consequences later.

Mental Health The Part We Often Ignore Until We Cannot

Stress does not stay in the mind.
It shows up in your breath.
Your sleep.
Your shoulders.
Your gut.
Your motivation.
Your relationships.

Ignoring stress does not dissolve it. It simply gives it more room to grow.

Focusing on your mental health means checking in with yourself regularly.

How am I doing
What do I need today
Am I overwhelmed or am I avoiding the very things that would help me feel better
Am I being gentle with myself
When was the last time I created space to rest

This is why the community at POP matters so much. It is why we focus on creating a place where people feel welcome safe and seen. Sometimes your Pilates class is your moment to breathe your hour to quiet the noise and your time to step out of stress and into clarity.

Pilates and Physical Health Movement That Protects You Before You Need It

Pilates is not something you turn to once things have already gone wrong. It is something you do so they do not go wrong in the first place.

Many people wait until pain appears
until their back starts to seize
until their balance feels unsteady
until stiffness becomes part of everyday life

Pilates stops that pattern before it begins.

It builds strength mobility balance and stability so your body can support you long before problems show up. It is proactive care. It is the quiet daily investment that helps you step away from future limitations and move through life with more confidence and ease.

Every class you take becomes a way of looking after your future self.

When You Bring It All Together

Focusing on your health is not dramatic. It is not one huge gesture. It is the daily rhythm of choosing yourself.

A nourishing breakfast instead of skipping meals
A walk instead of another hour scrolling
A Pilates class instead of staying stuck in your head
A moment of stillness instead of pushing through
An early bedtime instead of burning yourself out
A glass of water instead of another coffee

These small choices create the life you want to feel. The life that is easier. The life that supports you.

Ashley Was Right

If we ignore our health long enough eventually we lose the luxury of choice. Our bodies take over. Symptoms demand attention. Energy fades. Movement feels limited.

But when we focus on our health now gently and consistently we give ourselves more joy more freedom more confidence and more strength.

This is why we do what we do at Pilates on Plains.
This is why you show up.
This is why Ashley’s words matter.

They remind us of one clear loving truth.

Take care of yourself now so you can live fully later.

A Final Note

Our new system is now live and ready for you. We cannot wait to see you at the studio and continue your journey with you.

What is your why
Hold it close. Let it guide you. Let it remind you why you show up for yourself.

XO Marion

Family Day: Unplug, Reconnect, and Tune into What Matters

We are family xo

There is something quietly powerful about Family Day.

No big expectations.
No gifts to buy…(although I am sure it is just a matter of time before Hallmark mades a card for it)
No elaborate dinners to host.

Just time.

And yet… time is the one thing we so easily give away to screens. Have you checked your screen time lately. Mine is pretty scary.

Phones glow at the dinner table.
Tablets hum in the corner.
Televisions chatter while we half-listen to the people sitting right beside us…even worse - all this with a phone in our hands

We are connected to everything and somehow disconnected from each other.

Family Day is a gentle invitation to press pause.

To look up.
To laugh without filming it.
To move your body instead of scrolling with your thumbs.
To sit across from someone and really see them.

The Power of Being Present

Presence is the most generous gift you can give.

When you step away from electronics, something shifts. Conversations deepen. Shoulders soften. The nervous system settles. Even the youngest family members respond to it. They do not want perfect. They want you.

And if you are surrounded by family today, lean in.

Play a board game.
Go for a walk.
Cook together.
Stretch together.

Move your body as a unit. Movement creates connection in a way words sometimes cannot.

And If You Are Alone

Family Day can feel different for everyone.

If you are on your own this year, let today be about you.

Unplug anyway.

Take a bath.
Read a book.
Journal.
Go for a quiet walk.
Light a candle and breathe deeply.

Pampering yourself is not indulgent. It is restorative. You deserve care too.

Family can mean many things. Sometimes it is the people we choose. Sometimes it is the community we build.

Movement Brings Us Together

One of the simplest ways to reconnect is to move together.

At Pilates On Plains, we see it all the time. Mothers and daughters sharing a reformer. Couples laughing through footwork. Friends encouraging each other through a plank series. Even younger family members learning how strong their bodies are.

It is not about perfection.
It is about showing up together.

This Family Day, consider starting a new tradition.

Unplug for an hour.
Move your body.
Bring someone with you.

Yes, even the young ones are welcome. We love seeing families experience movement together in a safe, supportive space.

Your Invitation

If you are looking for something meaningful to do this week, come to Pilates On Plains.

Bring your sister.
Bring your partner.
Bring your mom.
Bring your teen.
Bring your best friend.

Or come solo and let our community be your extended family.

Step away from the screens.
Step onto the reformer.
Step into connection.

Family Day is not about doing more.
It is about being more present.

We would love to see you.

Book your class, bring someone you love, and let’s move together.

xo

A Super fun filled snowy day.

This morning began with an email that me so happy.

**“Just popping in to say I’m loving the Healthy Habits Challenge.
I didn’t realize how chaotic my ‘non-habits’ were until I took your advice and started to stack my habits. My mornings are feeling a lot less  like I’m a walking tornado.

Honestly, I’m  feeling better about my time management. A tiny bit more organized.

I can’t wait to see what you’ve got for us next week. If week one and two helped me get my act together even a little, I’m hopeful for the weeks following*

I felt so good when I read that. It is what I meant it to be, simple, doable steps that help you feel even a little bit better than yesterday.

And then, as if the universe wanted to underline the theme of appreciation, the rest of the day unfolded in the loveliest way.

We woke up to a spectacular snowstorm, not one of those lovely dustings of snow that softens every rooftop and hushes the world…this was swirling, windy snow with the drifts getting bigger by the hour.

I thought for sure I was going to have a lazy A$$ morning sitting beside the fire watching a chick flick with Tnak by my side. Surely nobody would be coming to class today right? WRONG!!!. A few strong, spirited women, bundled up and made their way to Pilates on Plains. No amount of snow was going to slow them down. Their dedication set the tone for the whole day.

After class, life shifted from mindful movement to pure play. I headed to the hill for some tobogganing, with my son Andrew, his girlfriend Shelley, and her two girls, affectionately nicknamed Harvard and Beans. Tank came too, charging around as usual living up to his title, the Director of Happiness

Steve, having had surgery last week, couldn’t toboggan, but he stood at the top of the hill watching, laughing, and soaking up the fun.

Once we’d all transformed into walking snowmen, we headed back to my house for hot chocolate, Oreo ice cream, and Oreos on the side for that extra little sugar rush.

It was Harvard’s 12th birthday last week, and the smile she gave me when she opened her little gift warmed my heart. The girls sat on the couch beside me and shared some of their baby photos and videos with me…lots of giggles.

Just as they were heading out, Amazon arrived with Tank’s new winter boots. If you saw him testing them out in our POP stories, then you already know it was pure comedy. He looked like Bambi learning to walk. If you missed his boot-walking escapades, you can catch him on his own IG page: @tank_about_town.

Later, I made Steve’s favourite comfort meal, mashed potatoes, grilled chicken, gravy, peas, carrots.  Soul food. And after we ate, the three of us took our regular evening walk, Tank clacking along in his new boots.

Now I’m curled up, tired in the most beautiful way, thinking about how full the day felt. How lucky I am. How these ordinary moments pile up into the sweetest kind of life.

I hope you had even one moment today that made you exhale and smile. One moment that filled your own cup just a little.

Here’s to noticing the good, even on snowy days, especially on snowy days. ❄️

What sets Pilates On Plains apart from other studios?

I get asked this question a lot…fair question given there are so many studios out there for you to choose from…

I thought long and hard and here is my honest and true answer.

Pilates on Plains is your wellness provider - for body, mind, and everything in between.

AI is here to stay. We love it. We use it in so many parts of our lives.
But there’s one thing AI cannot do for you.

It cannot move your body.
It cannot calm your nervous system.
It cannot build real connection.

That part is up to you, showing up, again and again, for your body, your mind, and your soul.

The more research I do on what clients want, the more I am seeing a huge shift across boutique fitness studios.
It is clear, that you, my POP-stars, are way more informed, more intentional, and more invested in long-term wellness than I ever was at your age. You’re not chasing six-packs anymore. You’re chasing strength, mobility, longevity, community, and a life that feels good to live. So smart!!

Movement is no longer about burning calories.
It’s about feeling better. Sleeping better. Managing stress. Staying independent.
It’s about connection - to your body and to the people around you.

Pilates is not a quick fix.
It’s a long-term relationship with your health.

And today’s clients want more than just a workout.
You want emotional wellness. Mental clarity. Community.
You want to feel seen, heard, and supported, not just checked in.

And THAT is why POP is more than just another studio.
It’s why we offer conversations, workshops, journaling, social moments, and experiences beyond the reformer.
Wellness is no longer one-dimensional, and neither are you.

We know everyone is in a different phase of their movement and wellness journey.
Our goal is to meet you exactly where you are and walk alongside you as things evolve.

When you started at POP, you filled out an onboarding form that asked about more than fitness.
I’ve been reviewing those responses, and you’ll start seeing emails inviting you into experiences that reflect what you told us matters to you.
This is personalized care - and it will look different for everyone.

And that brings me to Healthy Habits.

Starting Monday morning, we begin our Healthy Habits Challenge, a gentle, supportive reset designed to help you reconnect with simple, sustainable practices that support how you want to feel in your everyday life.

This isn’t about perfection.
It’s about consistency, awareness, and small shifts that add up.

Healthy Habits is your invitation to slow down, check in, and recommit to yourself, with the support of this community behind you.

Happy New Year from POP & Bella

Shooters a breakfast? Why not!

Let’s Start 2026 the Right Way

Happy New Year to our wonderful POP & Bella community.

We are so excited to step into a brand new year with you, refreshed, inspired, and ready for what promises to be an incredible season ahead. POP & Bella is a wellness studio in Aldershot offering Pilates, massage therapy, spa services, and holistic wellness experiences all in one welcoming space. YUP….you read that right!

As we move into 2026, our focus is on growth, care, and community, and there are so many beautiful new things happening here. Be sure to read right to the end so you don’t miss anything. It’s about a two minute read, so maybe grab a cuppa tea.

Big, Beautiful Growth on the Bella Spa Side

We are absolutely thrilled to be expanding the Bella Spa side of our business this January.

In the coming weeks, we will be welcoming two new aestheticians to our team. Kenwall is a Registered Massage Therapist, and Haley specializes in Brazilian Lymphatic Massage.

I have personally experienced Brazilian Lymphatic Massage, and I can honestly say I was shocked by the difference I saw in my before and after photos. The results were impressive, and I cannot wait for you to experience it for yourself.

We are also adding a new nurse practitioner Frank, who will be offering Botox injections, further expanding our ability to support you in feeling confident, refreshed, and well cared for.

And we are not stopping there. We are currently interviewing for even more incredible modalities to round out our full spa menu. Our goal is to create a truly thoughtful, elevated wellness experience, all under one roof.

Introducing the POP Shop 💕

When you come into the studio, you will notice something new. Our POP Shop is almost open for business.

We will be offering charms and charm bracelets, purse charms, earrings, earbud cases, spa items, and POP logo hats, tees, and grip socks.

We love supporting local makers and small businesses, so if you know someone who creates beautiful things and would love to showcase their wares here, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Supporting our community is at the heart of everything we do.

Healthy Habits Challenge Starting January 12

On January 12, we will be kicking off a Healthy Habits Challenge, and we are so excited about this one.

This is a free six week course designed to help you get on track and stay on track in a realistic, supportive way.

Each week, a new habit challenge will be available at the studio. Simply come in, do your class, and take your weekly challenge home with you. Small steps, real life habits, and no overwhelm.

More details will be coming very soon, but we wanted you to be the first to know.

A Big Thank You to DOSE 💛

You may notice some small bottles in the fridge. These are from DOSE, and we are so grateful for their support.

Please help yourself to a turmeric and ginger wellness shot after class. It is such a healthy way to start the new year and especially helpful during cold and flu season.

2026 is all about feeling good, moving well, and taking care of yourself inside and out. Thank you for being part of this growing, caring, and incredibly special community.

We cannot wait to share everything that is ahead.

Happy New Year

A Little Christmas Note From Me & Tank 🤍

Last night, we had our family Christmas — pyjamas, games, laughter, way too much food, and even more love. It was one of those nights that reminds you what this season is really about. Not perfection…in fact my oven broke down. LOL..but it all worked out in the end. Everyone chipped in making our Xmas dinner at their own homes and brining it to us. Even our granddaughter, Savannah’s 16 year old, boyfriend made us Tiramisu…I cannot describe how incredible it was. We had no schedules…we just winged it all. An evening of just being together.

As the holidays unfold, I hope you give yourself permission to slow down.  Don’t sweat the small stuff. Take extra care of yourself and the people you love.  Laugh often. Say yes to the cozy moments and no to anything that feels heavy. Don’t forget to rest when you need to. The last of our kids left at 7:55 in an Uber…I was in bed by 8:00 and I swear I was asleep by 8:01! Lol

I also want to say thank YOU -truly -for being part of my new adventure at POP. Opening the studio has introduced me to some incredible people. I watch you show up for yourselves time and again. I save your inspiring messages to me… I’m so grateful for the energy, kindness, and community that’s already growing within these walls. It’s been inspiring, humbling, and exciting all at once.

And this is just the beginning.

I cannot wait for you to see what’s coming in the new year. New experiences, new offerings, and more of the little touches that make POP feel like home.

From my heart to yours - Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays…whatever your beliefs are…embrace them, embrace your family and friends and yourself too….and thank you for being here. 🤍

With gratitude,

Marion

Glow-Up Guide: Winter Skincare Tips (From Someone Who Used…Water 😄)

Winter has a way of changing our skin before we even realize it. Cold air, indoor heat, and less daylight can leave skin feeling dry, tight, and a little dull. The good news? A few small, intentional changes can make a big difference.

And I say this as someone who, for most of her life, had no skincare routine to speak of.

Honestly? I use water.
If my skin felt dry, it was Pond’s.
At the beach, Coppertone.
That was it. No serums, no steps, no “regimen.”

But lately… my skin has been asking for a little more.

A Simple Winter Skincare Regimen That Actually Works

This isn’t about doing everything. It’s about doing a few things well—and enjoying the process.

1. Hydration Comes First

Winter strips moisture quickly, especially if you’re indoors with the heat on. A richer moisturizer or layering a light serum underneath can help your skin stay comfortable and plump.

This was my biggest adjustment. I never thought much about hydration beyond “my skin feels fine.” Now, I notice immediately when it needs more, and when I give it that extra care, it shows.

2. Gentle Exfoliation (Once or Twice a Week)

Exfoliating removes dry, dull skin so hydration can actually sink in. The key is gentle, especially in winter.

Using something like Paula’s Choice BHA, sparingly, has been eye-opening for me. It’s effective without feeling harsh, which matters more now than it ever did before.

3. Masks Are No Longer Optional

Hydrating masks are winter skin’s best friend. They calm, soften, and bring life back to tired skin.

I’ll admit, masks used to feel indulgent and unnecessary. Now? They feel practical. Especially after a long week, there’s something grounding about slowing down and giving your skin ten quiet minutes. This is a great time to play a couple of favourite tunes, kick back and relax.

4. Seal It In With a Final Mist

A hydrating mist helps lock everything in and leaves skin feeling refreshed rather than heavy. It’s a small step, but one that makes the whole routine feel finished.

This is one of those steps I never knew I needed, until I tried it.

5. Roll, Relax, Repeat

Facial rollers help reduce puffiness, boost circulation, and feel incredible, especially in the winter.

It turns skincare into a moment, not a task. And that’s been the biggest shift for me: treating this as self-care, not maintenance.

Last Friday Night Brought It All Together

Friday’s Swiftie Pilates + Facial Night reminded me why these small rituals matter.

Pilates, facials, Taylor Swift playing, and the most incredible group of nurses laughing and relaxing together, t was joyful, light, and exactly what winter self-care should feel like.

Watching everyone glow afterward made me realize that this isn’t about chasing youth or perfection. It’s about honouring change and meeting ourselves where we are.

If You’re Evolving Too

If you’ve always been low-maintenance like me and are noticing that what worked for years doesn’t quite anymore, you’re not doing anything wrong.

You’re just entering a new season.

And sometimes that season starts with a little extra moisturizer, a good playlist, and permission to slow down.💗

A Little Invitation (Because Wellness Should Be Fun)

One thing I’ve learned along the way is that wellness doesn’t have to be serious or intimidating.

At Pilates on Plains and Bella, we’re all about fun, learning, and shared experiences. Trying something new, laughing a little, moving our bodies, taking care of our skin, and doing it together.

If you’re craving something a little different this winter…
If you want to add some fun to your life with a great group of women…
If you’ve been thinking, “I should do something just for me”

Let me know.
I’m always happy to help create something that feels welcoming, relaxed, and joyful.

Sometimes it starts with Pilates.
Sometimes it’s facials, music, or tea and conversation.
And sometimes it’s just showing up and seeing where it leads.

Join Us: Pilates in Pyjamas

WINTER SKINCARE

Our POP + Bella Facial Steps

01 — GENTLE CLEANSING

We began with a gentle, balanced cleanser to remove makeup, oil, and impurities without stripping the skin. Clean skin creates the perfect base for everything that follows.

(We used a mild, non-drying cleanser suitable for all skin types.)

02 — LIQUID EXFOLIATION

Next, we applied a gentle liquid exfoliant to smooth the skin and remove dead surface cells. This step helps brighten the complexion and allows hydration to penetrate more effectively.

(Gentle exfoliation is key—especially in winter.)

03 — SOOTHE WITH A MASK & ADDED GEL EYE PATCHES

We then applied a calming, hydrating facial mask and allowed the skin time to rest and absorb all the goodness. This is where relaxation meets results. While waiting for the mask to dry we added cooling, moisturizing gel eye patches.  We also gave our lips a little love with a brown sugar scrub.

(Mask time = glow time.)

04 — HYDRATE & PLUMP

A hydrating treatment was applied to nourish and replenish moisture. This step focuses on restoring softness, comfort, and glow to winter-stressed skin.

(Hydration is the heart of winter skincare.)

05 — — SEAL & FINISH

To finish, we misted the skin to lock in hydration and gently used facial rollers to boost circulation and reduce puffiness—leaving skin refreshed, calm, and glowing.

(The final touch makes all the difference.)

06_ _ Lovely Lips

Sealed it with some kissable lips using Pro calogen peptide lip plumping gloss.

Cozy December Rituals to Bring More Joy Into Your Life (And One Special POP Class That Includes Them All!) ✨

December invites us to slow down, soften, and create little pockets of comfort in the middle of a busy season.
At Pilates on Plains, we’re embracing that spirit fully, and we’re hosting a very special Pilates in PJ’s class on December 16th that brings all the cozy vibes together.

But even before that, you can start enjoying these simple rituals at home.

Here are five warm, easy December practices to sprinkle into your days, and you’ll experience all of them during our upcoming class.

1. Do Pilates (Even Just a Little Each Day)

Pilates is grounding, calming, and energizing, the perfect winter movement.

Try a few minutes at home:
• Gentle roll-downs
• Spinal stretches
• Slow core activation
• Breath-led movement

It doesn’t have to be long, it just has to feel good.
And yes… it feels even better in pajamas.

2. Treat Yourself to Cozy, Seasonal PJ’s

Holiday pajamas are a mood all on their own.
Soft flannel, plaid, velvet, or your favourite winter print,  they instantly shift you into comfort mode.

Fresh PJs signal to your mind and body:
This is my time. Slow down. Enjoy this.

If you need a nudge to buy a fun holiday pair… consider this it.

3. Make the Perfect Hot Chocolate

A cozy December ritual in a mug.

Simple, delicious hot chocolate recipe:
• 1 cup warm milk (any kind)
• 1 tbsp good cocoa
• 1-2 tsp sugar or maple syrup
• Tiny pinch of salt
• Optional: vanilla extract
• Finish with whipped cream, marshmallows, or chocolate shavings

Sip slowly.
Let it warm your hands.
Let it slow your pace.

4. Take Time for a Journal Prompt

Journaling brings clarity, calm, and grounding, especially during a busy month.

Try this gentle December prompt:
“What is one moment today that brought me joy or comfort?”

Make it easy:
• Keep your journal somewhere visible
• Light a candle
• Write one sentence,  that’s enough

Journaling helps you notice the sweetness in your day.

5. Set the Mood: Christmas Music + a Scented Candle

These two together create instant December magic.

Choose a playlist that warms your heart,  soft piano carols, jazzy classics, or your favourite festive songs.

Light a candle with a winter scent like pine, cinnamon, vanilla, or “holiday hearth.”

Music + candlelight:
• soften stress
• shift your energy
• make ordinary evenings feel special

At POP, these two elements will set the atmosphere for our Pilates in PJ’s evening, warm, peaceful, and full of holiday comfort.

✨ Want to Experience All of This Together? Join Us December 16 ✨

If doing all of these on your own feels overwhelming,
or if you simply want a beautiful night of movement and cozy December connection,
you’re invited to a special POP experience:

🎄 Pilates in PJ’s, December 16 - a second evening will be added if needed.

Featuring:
• Cozy pilates in your favourite pajama set
• Soft Christmas music
• Gentle seasonal lighting + scented candles
• A warm hot chocolate moment
• A calming journal prompt to end the evening

If the first class fills, we will add a second one,
first come, first served, so book early if you'd love to join.

Let this be your little slice of holiday comfort.

We can’t wait to share the coziness with you. ✨

Cheers to a beautiful December.

Taking Care of Yourself During the Holiday Season

The holiday season is filled with sparkle and celebration, but it can also feel overwhelming. The pressure to make everything perfect, show up for everyone, and hold everything together often leaves people feeling tired before December even begins. This is your reminder that taking care of yourself is not selfish. It is essential.

I understand how quickly life can become overwhelming and how fast our priorities can shift. Two years ago, on November first, Steve was told he had eight weeks to live. We were in Florida at the time, and everything we thought we knew about the months ahead changed in an instant. Everyone believed we were facing our last Christmas together.

People often ask how we handled that time. Did we go all out and try to create an over the top Christmas because we thought it might be our last. The truth is the opposite. I did not even put up a tree. None of the usual holiday tasks mattered. What mattered were the simple things we could do together. We went for walks. We sat by the pool with a drink. We played pickleball. We cooked dinner at home and talked for hours. These small moments became our Christmas. They were quiet, calm, and full of love.

That experience changed how I see the holidays. It taught me that the season is not about how much we do. It is about how present we are. It is about choosing connection over chaos, simplicity over pressure, and calm over perfection. It is about giving ourselves permission to breathe.

Sometimes, I know, it’s easier said than done. I am literally having a ‘moment’ as I am working on this blog. I cannot get the photo above to fit the space. It’s driving me crazy. I keep trying over and over and I want to cry…but I won’t. lol…well…I am trying really hard not to! It is so frustrating not being able to do this for myself. So, I am leaving it. It is what it is…the picture is not the story. Simplicity over pressure, calm over perfection…breathe!

Our Director of Happiness at your service .

Strength is Built in the Messy Moments.

Since opening the doors to Pilates on Plains, I want to share something honest. This whole experience is equal parts magical and overwhelming.

I knew opening a studio would take work, but I do not think anything truly prepares you for the everything of it. It is not a “build it and they will come” kind of story. It is a “build it, then market it, nurture it, grow it, fix it, show up for it, introduce it to the community, show up again, and keep showing up” kind of story.

And truthfully, I would not trade a second of it.

Every day feels like a brand new adventure. No two days look even remotely the same yet. Some mornings I wake up buzzing with ideas. Other mornings I wonder if I can bolt the studio door and hide under a blanket with Tank. 🐾 He would support that decision.

There is the joy. The smiles. The people I have met. The messages from clients who feel stronger or more confident or simply happier when they leave than when they arrived.

And then there is the reality. The marketing. The endless to do lists. The community events. The decisions. The things I did not know I did not know. And the habits I keep telling myself I will create tomorrow. It is a lot. A beautiful lot, but still a lot.

I would love to sit here wearing my rosy coloured glasses and write a story about how easy it all is.

But I prefer to be transparent.

Building something from scratch, something meaningful, something with heart, takes grit. It takes vulnerability. It takes trusting yourself on days when you feel unsure. And it takes learning to breathe through those moments when the overwhelm settles in and quietly asks if you are sure you can do this.

Yes. I am.

Because I love this studio with my whole heart.

I love the sound of laughter drifting across the reformers.

I love watching shoulders relax the second someone walks through the door.

I love the small routines that are slowly forming, even when they are imperfect.

I love the feeling of possibility that lives inside the space, as if it knows this is only the beginning.

And I love that every person who walks in becomes a tiny part of this story we are creating together.

We are still at the very beginning of this journey.

There is so much to learn and build and refine and discover. This is what I am learning:

Dreams do not get easier.

You simply get stronger.

…And here is my invitation to you

As I have been navigating these first messy and magical months, I keep coming back to one simple truth.

Showing up is the hardest part, but it is also the most powerful.

And I want to turn that back to you for a moment.

If you have been wanting to build a fitness habit

If you have been thinking about prioritizing your health

If you have been telling yourself you will start soon

Maybe this is your sign.

You do not need the perfect schedule.

You do not need the perfect outfit.

You do not need motivation that lasts forever.

You just need one moment today where you choose yourself.

Start small.

Start gentle.

Start imperfect.

But start.

Maybe that looks like booking one Pilates class this week.

Maybe it is a ten minute walk.

Maybe it is stretching when you wake up instead of reaching for your phone.

Maybe it is simply deciding you deserve to feel strong and cared for.

Just like building this studio has taught me, habits are not created through grand gestures.

They are created through tiny moments of courage, repeated again and again.

So here is my heartfelt invitation.

Show up for yourself, even in the smallest way.

Your body will thank you.

Your energy will shift.

Your confidence will grow.

And one month from now you might look back and say

“I cannot believe how far I have come.”

And if Pilates on Plains becomes part of that journey, I would love nothing more than to cheer you on every step of the way.

XO Marion

Finding Purpose in Everyday Life

Have you ever felt like you are moving through your days without a real sense of direction? It is so easy to get caught up in the routines and responsibilities of life, but one of the most powerful ways to live with energy and fulfillment is by discovering your purpose.

In the Blue Zones, where people live some of the longest and healthiest lives in the world, purpose is not an add-on. It is a foundation. People wake up each morning with a reason to get out of bed. They move through their day with meaning. Whether that meaning comes from nurturing family relationships, contributing to their community, or doing work that matters to them, their sense of purpose fuels their joy and their longevity.

Here are a few simple ways to help you discover and live your purpose:

1. Reflect on what matters most

What lights you up? Is it family, creativity, movement, learning, or helping others? Think about the moments that make you feel most like yourself and look for ways to invite more of them into your daily life.

2. Set meaningful goals

Purpose becomes stronger when it has direction. Set small, intentional goals that align with your values. These do not need to be big or complicated. They only need to be honest. Goals that connect you to something bigger than yourself create flow, focus, and momentum.

3. Give back with intention

At Pilates on Plains, we believe that moving our bodies and moving our hearts belong together. This season, we are putting that belief into action with a food donation drive to support families here in Burlington who need a little extra care.

The Burlington Food Bank now serves thirty to thirty five families every day, more than double what they once did. Last year alone they recorded more than twenty thousand visits. These numbers are heavy to read, but together we can help lift someone’s day.

If each of us contributes even a few non-perishable items, imagine the collective impact our POP community could make. A donation box will be available in the studio. Please check expiry dates before donating. Every can, every box, and every small act of kindness matters.

Helping others does more than support the community. It reminds us that purpose does not always come from grand gestures. Sometimes it is found in simple acts of giving, caring, and showing up.

4. Stay curious

Trying something new or revisiting an interest you once loved can reignite your sense of purpose. Explore a workshop, learn a skill, read something uplifting, or gently step outside your comfort zone. Curiosity has a way of opening doors you were not expecting.

5. Connect with like-minded people

Purpose grows in community. Surround yourself with people who share your values, encourage you, and inspire you. That is what Pilates on Plains strives to be - a place where support, strength, and connection live both inside and outside the studio.

As you move through your week, take a moment to reflect on what brings meaning to your life. What gifts do you have that can make the world a little brighter?

If part of your purpose is helping others, join us in filling our food donation box. Together, we will move with intention and strengthen not only our bodies but also our community.

Let’s make this season one of kindness, compassion, and purpose.

One month in and I am in love.

They say love shows up when you least expect it. I was not looking for it, not really. But somewhere between the dust of renovations, the late night planning sessions, and the moment the very first reformer arrived at the door, something happened. I fell head over heels.

Her name is Pilates on Plains, or POP for short.

From the moment the doors opened, it felt like we had known each other forever. She is beautiful, a little high maintenance, and keeps me up at night, but I love her all the same. Every morning when I walk through the front door and switch on the lights, I feel a spark, like a first date that keeps surprising me.

I have met so many wonderful people because of her. Some have completely surprised me in the best ways. A few have kept things interesting with their own little plot twists. But that is what love is, imperfect and unpredictable, and absolutely worth it.

Some classes fill so quickly they make my heart skip. Others are still finding their rhythm, and that is perfectly okay. The hardest part is choosing which ones stay and which ones need to shift or evolve. Just like any relationship, there are compromises and tough calls. And sometimes the hardest part is not wanting to disappoint the people who have been with me from the beginning, my instructors.

They have been my rocks. Supportive, kind, funny, and so loyal. They send the sweetest messages, and yes, I save every one of them. On the hard days, I reread them and remember exactly why I started this journey.

There are things I wish I had done differently. There always are. But love teaches you patience. It teaches you that perfection is not the goal, connection is. And connection is something we have in abundance at Pilates on Plains.

The other day, I realized I had not vacuumed my house in a week. A full week. Normally I run the vacuum every day, but lately I have been living, breathing, and dreaming about the studio. When I finally did vacuum, I could have made Tank a fluffy little brother from all the fur. I laughed so hard, and that is when it hit me. This is what love looks like. A little messy, a little chaotic, and completely full of joy.

Someone mentioned recently that I follow a lot of people on Instagram. Apparently if the number you follow is close to the number of people following you, it means you are “fishing for followers.” Not me. I follow people because I am genuinely interested in their lives. Every single person who follows Pilates on Plains gets a personal thank you message from me. If someone takes time out of their day to connect, it matters. Some of our clients found us because of those messages, and now I get to see their families, their dogs, their celebrations, their adventures. That is not fishing. That is friendship.

So here we are, still early in this love story. I am still smitten. Still tired. Still learning. But my heart is full. Pilates on Plains is not just a studio. She is part of me.

And like any love story worth telling, I cannot wait to see where this one goes next.

If you have been waiting for a sign to start something new, this might be it.

Come fall in love with movement, community, and the magic of feeling stronger inside and out.

Book your next class or stop by to say hello.

Love grows beautifully in places like this.

Don’t Take My Word For It.

Do not take my word for it. Hear it from our POP members.

At Pilates on Plains, we talk often about mindful movement, strength from within, and slowing down long enough to reconnect with yourself. But sometimes the most powerful way to understand what Pilates can do is to hear it directly from the people experiencing it.

Every person who walks through our doors brings their own story. For some, it is about recovery. For others, it is about rebuilding strength, confidence, or a sense of self. The reformer might look like a sleek piece of equipment, but to many of our members it has become a symbol of healing, empowerment, and possibility.

Here is what a few of our incredible POP members have shared about their journeys.

Becca — Managing scoliosis with strength

“I joined Pilates on Plains because it is conveniently located in Aldershot, and the owner took the time to get to know my goals and limitations. I wanted to improve my strength and overall muscle tone, and the cozy, candle lit flows are totally my jam.”

“After just three classes, I am feeling that good sore in all the right places and can already tell my muscles are getting stronger.”

“If you have scoliosis, do not let it stop you. Both Pilates and yoga are wonderful for managing it. The reformer does not bother my back at all, and every exercise can be adjusted to fit your body’s unique needs.”

Dan — Adding Pilates to a full fitness routine

“I came to support a friend and try something new. I have only done Pilates twice so far, but it is an excellent overall body workout.”

“I plan to keep coming once a week while I am in the country. I really enjoy the one on one training, and the instructor is very encouraging.”

“I actually like it better than yoga… but do not tell my yoga girl that I said so!”

Kayla — Rebuilding strength after knee rehab

“My main goal was to see if I could actually do Pilates in the first place after my knee surgery, to build confidence again and get a different professional opinion on how my recovery was going. I wanted to test my limits in a safe space and see where my strength and mobility were at.”

“It has been so much more than I expected. After my first class, I felt refreshed and genuinely grateful to have found such a positive atmosphere to start my Pilates journey. It has helped me rebuild strength, balance, and confidence that I had lost over the past couple of years because of my injury. I cannot wait to continue.”

“I would tell anyone recovering from an injury to take it slow. Recovery is not a race. Do what makes you feel good but also challenges you a little. The best feeling is finally starting to feel like yourself again, and that is what keeps me going every time.”

Marnie — Finding time for herself again

“I was in need of a fresh start. It was time to start prioritizing myself, to become stronger for the long run. Work always seemed to come first, and I knew I needed to create a new routine where my health came first.”

“I am still early in my Pilates journey and working on consistency, but every time I am here, I feel one step closer to where I want to be. The instructors are wonderful at modifying classes for beginners, and I already feel myself becoming a stronger version of me.”

“I would tell any woman who has been putting herself last: do not wait one more minute. Sign up for a class, just once, try putting yourself first. I have made every excuse not to go and still struggle with that sometimes, but every time I book a class it feels like a small commitment to me. There is no judgment here at Pilates on Plains. It is such a welcoming, boutique style environment.”

Your turn. Start your own POP story.

No two journeys look the same, and that is exactly what makes Pilates so transformative. Whether you are recovering from an injury, building strength, or simply taking an hour to care for yourself, there is a place for you here at POP.

If these stories inspire you, maybe it is time to begin your own.

Join us at Pilates on Plains and discover how this practice can become part of your story.

Do joints actually dry out when you are dehydrated?

Not exactly. Your joints do not shrivel up like a sponge left in the sun if you miss a few glasses of water. Here is what really happens inside the body.

What actually keeps your joints lubricated

Your joints contain synovial fluid. This is the smooth, slippery substance that reduces friction every time you bend, twist, or move. It works almost like a natural lubricant for your knees, hips, wrists, and elbows.

Synovial fluid is made of water, hyaluronic acid, and specialized proteins. Water is a major part of it, which is why hydration plays a supporting role in joint health.

So is hydration important for your joints?

Yes, but not in the dramatic way some wellness memes suggest. Dehydration does not instantly turn your joints into rusty hinges. But chronic low hydration can influence how they feel. When the body is not well hydrated:

• There is less water available to produce synovial fluid

• Shock absorption becomes less efficient

• Joint stiffness may increase over time

Does your body prioritize where water goes?

Absolutely. When hydration levels drop, the body triages water to the most essential systems first.

• The brain and vital organs get priority

• Less critical systems, like your joints, receive less support

• You may feel more stiffness or achiness when dehydration becomes habitual

The bottom line

Your joints do not dry out like a houseplant you forgot to water. But consistent hydration does support joint comfort and mobility. It helps maintain synovial fluid balance and cushions the cartilage that protects your joints.

Water alone will not fix knee pain or replace movement, but it is an important piece of overall joint health along with exercise, nutrition, and inflammation control.

Stay hydrated and stay POP strong
